Spinal Anesthesia with Hyperbaric Solution of Bupivacaine and Tetracaine

Abstract
This study was conducted in the anesthesiology department of Chosun university hospital from August to December 1987, using 0.5% hyperbaric tetracaine and 0.4% hyperbaric bupivacaine as agents for spinal anesthesia.
The following results were obtained.
1. No significant difference were seen in the segmental heights and the highest level of sensory loss between the 0.5% hyperbaric tetracaine groups with 13mg and 0.4% hyperbaric bupivacaine groups with 20mg.
2. Less time was needed to achieve, complete motor blockade in the 13mg hyperbaric tetracaine group than in the hyperbaric bupivacaine groups.
The duration of motor blockade was more prolonged in the hyperbaric tetracaine groups using 13mg than in the hyperbaric bupivacaine groups.
3. The group using 13mg of hyperbaric tetracaine demonstrated a significant decrease in blood pressure as compared with group using 20mg of hyperbaric bupivacaine.
4. Following spinal anesthesia, headache developed in 4 cases(6.7%)..
From the above results, we concluded that hyperbaric tetracaine and hyperbaric bupivacaine are appropriate anesthetic agents for surgery on the total abdominal hysterectomy.
